It's been awhile...

Hello avid readers and camp enthusiasts---   Willow Springs has had a fantastic and full autumn! Since summer ended, camp has hosted a wonderful variety of program. We've seen ten full encampment groups, three individual troops, two leadership weekends, one recruitment event, and eight council sponsored events. Whew... it has been one thrill of a ride! Some of our favorite fall highlights include: A three hour outdoor chef adventure for a troop made up of 29 Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors in which Juniper and Leprechaun fearless led them in making a three course meal consisting of: chicken soup, cornbread, quesadillas, foil packets, and for dessert... cupcakes baked in orange peels.  A group of teen girls participating in the Artisan program critically analyzing the dis-empowering lyrics of some popular music The Dancin' Daisies and Just Juniors who spent only one night of camp and did a whirlwind of over 10 activities each! Last Week at Willow!

Image
It's the last week of the 2012 summer season at Willow Springs, and the campers and staff are going out with a bang. On Sunday night, all of the girls got to experience a star talk by local astronomer Dennis Young, and although cloudy skies prevented campers from seeing the sky through his various telescopes, they did get a close-up view of camp and a keepsake photograph of the night sky in action. On Monday, the Cocopah girls got to get their hands dirty and work on creating another garden at camp, the Hidden girls got to have a spa party and bake cupcakes, and the entire camp got to cook out a chicken fajita dinner with s'mores for dessert! Overall, it's been a great start to the last week, and we're all extremely grateful for such an exceptional camp season.

Week Seven

Image
It's been a rainy start to Week Six, but the girls are having a good time dancing, sewing, throwing clay, working on team building, wood burning, singing songs, and playing games. Notably, the Cocopah girls had the opportunity to go shopping for the clothes they will spend the week altering at the Wild Willow today, Willow Springs' secret clothing boutique. You can see the photos from today below!

Week 6 Update

Image
Hello, followers! Campers and staff have been thrust into the past this past this week, participating in retro dance parties, cave paintings, and fire building. While the Tribal Leap campers went on a grueling (yet rewarding) hiking/camping trip this week, the Hualapai unit has leaped from trees and zipped across the woods. Meanwhile, the small but enthusiastic Cocopah crew has been working on paper mache balloons and jewelry, Spotlight's on You has been preparing for their play about time travel, Art Attack has built mobiles, and the Navajo girls have been creating lip gloss and doing facials. You can see some of the photos from this week below!

Popcorn, Shaved Ice, and Everything Nice

Image
What do you get when you combine a dunk tank, a bouncy house, a popcorn machine, shaved ice, face paint, and bean bag tosses? That's right! Yesterday we celebrated the week's theme with a camp-wide celebration of everything carnival (except clowns). Today, camp finally saw the first signs of the monsoon season, and although some units had to adjust their schedules to accommodate some distant thunder, every camper got to enjoy cooking outside and some fun indoor programming (including making/performing skits and crafting ceramic masks). You can see photos from today and yesterday below!

Happy Returns!

Welcome back, loyal Willow Springs followers! Although it's been quite a while since the last posting, quite a lot has happened in the past few weeks. Our fourth week was Galaxy Girl themed, and a number of performances were spotlighted throughout the end of the week. A play adapted from Hamlet and a dance performed by the Cocopah girls rocked the stage, not to mention an end-of-the-week campfire that rocked the socks off of the Willow staff. The weekend kicked off quickly after check-out with Daisy Weekend. Although the group was small in number, the six and seven year olds got to make oceans in a bottle, chocolate-covered bananas, and visit the camp's secret play area after an alphabet hike. After the girls went home (probably with remnants of face paint and glitter clinging to their hair), the camp had a break for the Fourth of July and met back up again yesterday to celebrate Carnival Week. You can see what kind of fun the girls have been having below! (ALSO: The daisies

Week Four Already?

Image
Hey ya'll! Sorry for the belated updates--it's been quite busy at Willow Springs lately! Troop Camp this weekend went exceedingly well, and the weekend ran smoothly into the camp's last week before the mid-season break. Last night, the story of Willowmina and her yellow chicks was shared around the fireless campfire, the green-faced administrative staff landed on planet Earth and returned to their home galaxy, and some girls had the opportunity to walk the camp's labyrinth, lit up by handfuls of battery-operated candles. Today, the Apache girls went on a hike and learned about edible plants, the Up in the Trees campers got to experience the camp's low challenge course, the Cocopah unit began learning the week's dance routine, and the Navajo crew got to make sand candles. Meanwhile, the DIY Divas were working hard to design and build a garden. You can see the photos from today (and some pottery that was fired from last week) below!
